Construction is officially underway on the long-awaited Surrey–Langley SkyTrain extension, a transformative transit project that will add 16 kilometers of new rapid transit track and eight new stations along Fraser Highway. The extension will connect Surrey to 203 Street in Langley City, marking the first time SkyTrain service will extend into the Township of Langley and beyond the current Expo Line terminus at King George Station.
This historic expansion is expected to be completed by 2029 and is part of the region’s broader strategy to reduce congestion, support sustainable growth, and improve access to public transportation across the fast-growing Fraser Valley.
“This project is a game-changer for our region,” said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. “It will make transit faster and more accessible, while supporting housing, economic development, and climate goals.”
The new line will serve key communities along Fraser Highway, including Fleetwood, Clayton Heights, and Willowbrook, dramatically improving east-west transit connectivity. Stations will be strategically located to support transit-oriented development and reduce commute times for tens of thousands of residents and workers.
Funded by the federal, provincial, and municipal governments, the Surrey–Langley extension is expected to generate thousands of construction jobs and long-term economic benefits. Once complete, the SkyTrain ride from Langley City to downtown Vancouver will take just over an hour—without the need for transfers or vehicle traffic delays.
Transit advocates and local officials alike have welcomed the project, seeing it as a crucial step in addressing regional transportation challenges and supporting the future of sustainable urban mobility in Metro Vancouver.
As construction progresses over the next several years, residents can expect to see roadwork, station development, and track installation along the Fraser Highway corridor—a sign that a more connected future is on its way.
