The Aberthau Community Centre in Point Grey is close to home for me living in Kitsilano. A mere 5 minute drive and I'm at the centre with free parking and a 2 minute walk from Jericho Beach. I've used this community centre many times taking classes with my young children and dance classes with my husband. It's a beautiful building at a fabulous location. Well worth a visit or two or more...
History
Aberthau Community Centre is a cherished landmark in Vancouver’s West Point Grey, blending rich heritage with vibrant community life. Originally built in 1910, the grand Tudor-style mansion was designed by architect Samuel Maclure as the family residence for James Rear, a successful businessman. The name “Aberthau” is Welsh for “place of light.” During World War II, the RCAF Officers’ Mess used the property as officers’ quarters before it was donated to the City of Vancouver in 1972.
Following its transformation, Aberthau underwent significant renovations to restore and repurpose its unique woodwork, stained glass, and period features, while adapting the mansion for public use. Today, it stands as a community centre offering a diverse range of programs and facilities.
Today's Community Centre
Aberthau’s fitness centre and gymnasium, constructed as part of later additions in the 1970s and upgraded over time, provide modern amenities for all ages. The site is especially popular for fitness classes, open gym times, and youth sports.
A unique highlight is the West Point Grey Pottery Studio, established in 1973. This collective offers classes, studio memberships, and regular pottery sales—many pieces are available for purchase at seasonal events and local markets, supporting both established and emerging artists.
Aberthau is also renowned as a venue for weddings, meetings, and special events. Its heritage interiors, landscaped gardens, and spacious rooms make it a sought-after site for celebrations. The facility is regularly booked for community gatherings, birthday parties, and arts programs.
Families can enjoy a robust calendar of children’s programming, including arts camps, after-school activities, and seasonal festivals. Aberthau remains a beloved place where Vancouver’s history and contemporary community spirit unite.
