The Mechanical Contractors Association of BC (MCABC) is proud to announce that the Attorney General of British Columbia has officially directed staff to begin drafting Prompt Payment Legislation. This long-anticipated move is a direct result of consistent and collaborative advocacy efforts from MCABC and their partners at the British Columbia Construction Association (BCCA), the Electrical Contractors Association of British Columbia (ECABC), and other key voices across the construction sector.
Why This Matters to You
Whether you're a contractor, sub-trade, supplier, or business owner involved in construction, prompt payment isn't just a financial issue—it’s a matter of fairness, business stability, and economic growth. Delayed payments can halt projects, affect payrolls, and disrupt cash flow for small- and medium-sized businesses. Prompt Payment Legislation would introduce clear timelines for when payments must be made, helping ensure that contractors and workers are paid on time for the work they’ve completed.
In a recent Ministry statement, the BC government reaffirmed its commitment to economic growth by emphasizing the importance of timely payment in the construction industry. The Ministry also pointed to Ontario’s legislation as a successful model, noting positive results and financial predictability in that province since its adoption.
What Comes Next
MCABC remains a committed leader in this process and will continue working with industry partners and government representatives to ensure this legislation is well-designed, practical, and effectively enforced. Their efforts are helping pave the way for a more equitable and reliable construction environment across the province.
This development is not just good news—it’s a sign of progress, and a major win for every business and worker that relies on fair and timely compensation in BC’s construction sector.
