Nestled in the heart of Abbotsford’s picturesque Sumas Prairie, Birchwood Dairy Farm has been a cherished family-run operation since 1968. Founded by Grace and Len Krahn, the farm has grown from a modest dairy operation into a beloved community destination that blends tradition, sustainability, and a passion for quality.

A Legacy of Family and Farming

For over five decades, Birchwood Dairy has remained a family affair. Today, the Krahn sons, Rick and Brian, manage the farm’s daily operations. Rick oversees the herd of approximately 120 Holstein cows, ensuring they are well-fed with fresh hay and silage grown right on the property . Brian, on the other hand, manages the ice cream production and the country store, bringing a sweet touch to the farm's offerings.

From Cow to Cone: Dairy Excellence

Birchwood Dairy is not just a farm; it's also a processing plant and ice cream parlor. They produce a wide array of fresh dairy products daily, including milk, cream, yogurt, cheeses like feta and cheddar curds, and over 50 flavors of gourmet ice cream and frozen yogurt . The ice cream, crafted from farm-fresh milk, boasts a rich, velvety texture thanks to its 16% butterfat content . Flavors range from classics like Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Rocky Road to seasonal delights featuring local BC berries.

A Destination for All Ages

Visitors to Birchwood Dairy can enjoy more than just delicious dairy products. The farm offers a variety of attractions, including a petting zoo open during the summer months, an observation room where guests can watch cows being milked daily from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM, and a country kitchen serving light lunches . The farm's welcoming atmosphere makes it a popular stop for families, school groups, and tourists exploring the Fraser Valley.

Commitment to Community and Sustainability

Birchwood Dairy is deeply rooted in the Abbotsford community. The farm supports various local initiatives and events, including partnerships with organizations like Canuck Place Children’s Hospice . Sustainability is also a core value; the farm employs practices aimed at reducing its ecological footprint, such as using renewable energy sources and efficient irrigation systems .
