On Monday, May 5, 2025, Vancouver’s Segal Building will become a hub for some of the brightest minds in quantum science. From 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., local and international experts will gather for "Creating the Quantum Future - Education, Innovation, and Diplomacy," an event celebrating the International Year of Quantum.
Organized by the Consulates General of France and Switzerland in Vancouver, alongside Simon Fraser University’s Physics Department, the Canadian Association of Physicists, the Canada Excellence Research Chairs program, and MITACS, the event promises a day of learning, connection, and inspiration.
For Canadian readers, this is a rare opportunity to engage with global leaders in a field that is rapidly reshaping technology, healthcare, and industry. The day begins with a panel discussion, "Educating the Next Generation of Quantum Leaders," addressing how countries like Canada, France, and Switzerland are tackling the critical shortage of talent in quantum science.
Special attention will be given to promoting STEM education in high schools and creating more inclusive opportunities for women in the field. Speakers include Dr. Daria Ahrensmeier (SFU), Dr. Chloe Malbrunot (TRIUMF), and Dr. Ulrike Stege (University of Victoria), moderated by Ana M. Ciocoiu of D-Wave Systems.
Following a short presentation on SFU's outreach by Dr. Daniel Higginbottom and a networking lunch, attendees will hear from Dr. Catherine Lefebvre about the groundbreaking work of Switzerland’s Open Quantum Institute at CERN.
The afternoon will feature the Quantum Diplomacy Game — an innovative, interactive experience where participants role-play as scientists, policymakers, and industry leaders. Developed by GESDA, this exercise challenges players to navigate ethical and governance questions around disruptive technologies, highlighting the importance of science diplomacy in today’s world.
Whether you're an educator, student, researcher, or simply a curious mind, this event is a unique chance to be part of the quantum conversation shaping our future. WBN Digital encourages all readers interested in innovation and global collaboration to RSVP by May 1 and experience this inspiring event firsthand.
