Vancouver, BC - February 11, 2025 - Canada and Germany have taken a major step toward clean energy cooperation. On March 18, 2024, almost a year ago, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Jonathan Wilkinson, and Germany’s Vice-Chancellor and Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Robert Habeck, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This agreement will accelerate the commercial-scale trade of hydrogen, a clean energy source, between the two countries.

The Canada-Germany Hydrogen Partnership

The MOU builds on the Canada-Germany Hydrogen Alliance, which began in 2022. This agreement aims to help Canada become a world-leading hydrogen supplier while supporting Germany’s transition away from Russian fossil fuels. The newly created Bilateral Window, managed by Germany’s H2Global Foundation, will connect Canadian hydrogen producers with German buyers. This initiative provides long-term contracts, ensuring stable pricing and investment confidence.

Expanding Canada’s Hydrogen Industry

Canada has over 80 low-carbon hydrogen projects in development, attracting more than $100 billion in potential investment. Atlantic Canada is well-positioned to export hydrogen due to its strong wind energy resources and strategic shipping routes. Germany, which plans to import up to 70% of its hydrogen needs by 2030, sees Canada as a key partner in its energy transition.

This partnership strengthens Canada’s role as a leader in hydrogen innovation and economic growth while helping both countries achieve their climate goals. Learn more at the International Expo and Conference in Vancouver this June.
