Vancouver, BC - April 5, 2025 - Each April, the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) launches the Daffodil Campaign, a nationwide fundraiser and awareness drive to support those affected by cancer. Held annually across Canada, this initiative encourages people to donate, wear daffodil pins, and participate in events to honour cancer survivors and remember those lost to the disease. The campaign raises funds for life-saving research, patient support services, and advocacy efforts to improve cancer care. It takes place every spring, symbolizing new life and renewed hope.
Concern in 2025
In 2024, Canadian research projects received over $40 million USD in funding from the NIH alone. In a recent survey of 121 CCS-funded cancer researchers, 72% expressed concern about the impact of U.S. tariffs on their research projects, while 78% worried about reduced U.S. funding for collaborative projects.
“Changes happening south of the border are having ripple effects on cancer research in Canada. Our sustained investment in cancer research is essential. It’s lifesaving,” says Andrea Seale, Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Cancer Society. “Without sufficient funding, research momentum will stall, and promising treatments may be delayed by years – time that not every person diagnosed with cancer has.”
A Bright Beginning
The Daffodil Campaign traces its roots back to the 1950s, when volunteers in Toronto began selling daffodils to raise money for cancer research. The bright yellow flower quickly became a powerful symbol of resilience and solidarity. Over time, the campaign spread nationwide, with the CCS officially adopting the daffodil as its emblem. By the 1980s, the campaign had evolved into a signature event, with thousands of Canadians proudly wearing daffodil pins during April.
Today and Tomorrow
In 2025, the campaign continues to thrive. This year’s Daffodil Month includes in-person and online events, a digital daffodil garden, and community walks. Donations support cutting-edge research, a 24/7 cancer helpline, and transportation services for patients undergoing treatment. Looking ahead, the CCS plans to enhance digital fundraising platforms, expand its youth ambassador program, and develop more regional partnerships to better serve remote communities.
Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 26th, 2025, as the Canadian Cancer Society's Daffodil Ball, proudly presented by Wheaton Precious Metals, celebrates its 29th anniversary. This year's elegant affair will take place at the stunning Vancouver Convention Centre West, offering breathtaking views of Coal Harbour from its grand ballroom.
A Bloom of Hope
The Daffodil Campaign reminds Canadians that they are not alone in the fight against cancer. Whether by purchasing a pin, joining a fundraiser, or simply sharing stories, every action counts. As the daffodil blooms each spring, it carries with it a message of hope, strength, and unity—vital tools in the ongoing journey toward a cancer-free future.
