With a growing elderly population and an increasing shortage of nursing staff, societies around the world are grappling with how to ensure dignified and needs-based care. The Teleskoop research project, a collaboration between the FZI Research Center for Information Technology, Devanthro GmbH, and the Geriatric Research Group of Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, offers promising solutions by integrating humanoid robots into outpatient care.

For the first time, a humanoid tele-robot named Robody has been successfully tested in the daily lives of care recipients, supported remotely by human operators. Over a span of 23 days, Robody assisted individuals in real-life scenarios within their homes, providing help with mobility, daily tasks, and social interaction. The project, which also partnered with care providers such as Diakoniezentrum Pirmasens, Aiutanda GmbH, and Augustinum gGmbH, is the first of its kind worldwide.

What sets this initiative apart is its teleoperative approach. Care workers use immersive virtual reality technology to control the robot, enabling precise support while maintaining the personal connection essential in caregiving. The robot becomes a physical extension of the caregiver, who can engage with patients in a familiar and reassuring manner.

One of the most significant findings was the importance of human presence—via robot—as a key factor in the acceptance of care technology. The approach fosters trust, adaptability, and responsiveness to individual needs and routines.

By merging human empathy with robotic precision, the Teleskoop project marks a pioneering step toward more flexible and sustainable care models. It shows how intuitive assistance robotics can help address the caregiving crisis while preserving dignity, independence, and human connection.
