The Fraser Valley Conservancy brought together garden enthusiasts, conservationists, and curious residents this past weekend for its popular Spring Native Plant Sale, held in Abbotsford. The event focused on promoting the use of indigenous plants in home gardens and public landscapes, with the goal of fostering local biodiversity and encouraging environmental stewardship across the region.
Dozens of native plant species were available for purchase, including varieties of wildflowers, shrubs, and ground cover plants that thrive in the Fraser Valley’s unique climate and soil. Each plant offered wasn’t just ornamental—it also played a role in supporting local ecosystems, from providing food and habitat for pollinators to reducing the need for pesticides and excess watering.
“Our native plants are adapted to our local conditions and are crucial for healthy ecosystems,” said a representative from the Conservancy. “This event is about giving residents the tools and knowledge to make environmentally responsible choices in their own backyards.”
In addition to the plant sale, the event included educational booths, gardening tips, and hands-on demonstrations, where attendees learned about the benefits of native species, invasive plant management, and sustainable landscaping practices.
The plant sale is part of a broader initiative by the Fraser Valley Conservancy to build awareness around conservation and land stewardship. By encouraging people to plant native species, the organization hopes to create corridors of ecological health throughout urban and rural areas alike.
The enthusiastic turnout reflected a growing community interest in sustainable gardening and nature-based solutions. As more residents embrace the idea of landscaping with purpose, events like this underscore the powerful role that individual choices can play in protecting local wildlife and restoring natural balance.
