Langley Little Theatre (LLT) stands as a vibrant hub for community-driven theatrical arts in Langley, British Columbia. Formed in 2021 through the merger of Surrey Little Theatre and Langley Players Drama Club, LLT has quickly become a cornerstone of the local arts scene.

Surrey Little Theatre, established in 1958 by Betty Baines, began as a venue for her daughter to learn theatre arts. The group initially held meetings in the basement of the Dell Hotel, performing under the name North Surrey Thespians. In 1967, they acquired the former Clayton United Church, transforming it into their performance space. Over the decades, the theatre became renowned for its award-winning productions and commitment to youth programs.

Langley Players Drama Club also boasts a storied history, contributing significantly to the region's cultural fabric. The amalgamation of these two esteemed groups led to the birth of Langley Little Theatre, now operating out of the renovated Langley Playhouse at 4307 200 Street.

Current Season Highlights

LLT's 2024-2025 season showcases a diverse lineup of productions:

  • "Yaga" (February 13 - March 1, 2025): Directed by Jacq Ainsworth, this play reimagines the legend of Baba Yaga, presenting her as a complex, modern woman with morally ambiguous motives.
  • "According to Aurelie - A Musical" (May 1 - 17, 2025): Directed by Tarrah Tanaka with musical direction by Lauren Trotzuk, this charming, light-hearted musical follows a young romance author navigating the challenges of getting published and finding her "happily ever after."

Educational Initiatives

Beyond performances, LLT is dedicated to nurturing talent through various educational programs:

  • After School Drama Camp: A 12-week program for children aged 6-12, led by instructor Linda McRae, focusing on creativity, confidence, and teamwork.
  • Adult Acting Classes: Taught by award-winning director and actor Marko Hohlbein, these classes aim to help adults explore authentic and believable approaches to acting.

Community Engagement

LLT thrives on community involvement, offering numerous opportunities for volunteers to engage in various aspects of theatre production, from backstage support to front-of-house operations. This inclusive approach fosters a strong sense of community and provides invaluable experiences for individuals passionate about the performing arts.

Looking Ahead

As Langley Little Theatre continues to grow, it remains committed to delivering quality live theatre and educational programs. With a blend of classic and contemporary productions, LLT offers enriching experiences for both participants and audiences alike.
