Vancouver, BC - April 14, 2025 - In Vancouver, pharmacies have undergone a significant transformation since 2023, expanding their role in healthcare by administering more tests and prescribing certain medications. This shift, driven by the British Columbia government and the College of Pharmacists of BC, began in June 2023, aiming to ease pressure on the province’s strained healthcare system.
Community pharmacies across the city are now key players in providing accessible care, particularly for those without family doctors. The change reflects a broader effort to leverage pharmacists’ expertise amid growing healthcare demands.
Pharmacists in Vancouver can now prescribe for 21 minor ailments, including urinary tract infections, allergies, and contraception, following the implementation of new regulatory standards on June 1, 2023. This authority, outlined in the Health Professions Act, allows them to diagnose and treat conditions that don’t require lab tests or imaging, offering relief for common issues like cold sores or eczema.
Additionally, pharmacists can renew prescriptions for up to two years and provide emergency supplies, ensuring continuity of care. These services are often free for BC residents with a valid health card, making pharmacies a convenient first stop for non-emergency care.
The expanded testing capabilities have also made a difference. “I found this out when someone in my household had a severe sore throat and was thinking they might have strep throat,” said a Vancouver resident. “The local Shoppers Drug Mart said they would do a test for $30 right in-store.”
Since October 2022, pharmacists have been authorized to administer vaccines for flu, COVID-19, and shingles, as well as other injections for patients aged four and older. Despite challenges like workplace strain and staffing shortages, these changes empower pharmacists to practice closer to their full scope, enhancing Vancouver’s healthcare landscape and providing residents with faster, more accessible care.
