Whether you’re a first-timer or a Fondo veteran, preparation is the key to an unforgettable—and safe—ride. https://www.rbcgranfondo.com/whistler
A Brief History
The first GranFondo Whistler rolled out in 2010, inspired by Italy’s mass-participation “grand fondo” cycling tradition. The event quickly grew into one of North America’s largest and most scenic cycling challenges, attracting thousands from around the world. The route climbs 1900 meters from Stanley Park, Horseshoe Bay, Squamish, and Garibaldi Highlands to finish in Whistler Village.
Training Timeline & Strategy https://www.trainerroad.com/blog/gran-fondo-training-guide/
Here are some guidelines:
6 Months Out:
- Base Building: Start with regular rides 2–3 times a week, focusing on endurance rather than speed. Aim for 1–2 hour rides, gradually increasing your longest weekly ride.
- Strength & Flexibility: Add core and leg strength exercises to your routine, and stretch regularly to prevent injuries.
3 Months Out:
- Increase Intensity: Introduce hill repeats and interval training to build climbing power.
- Group Rides: Join local training rides to build skills in drafting, pacing, and riding in groups.
1 Month Out:
- Test Your Gear: Complete at least one long ride (80–100 km) using the bike, clothing, and nutrition you’ll use on event day.
- Taper: Begin to scale back your mileage in the last two weeks, focusing on rest and light rides.
Hydration & Nutrition
Proper fueling is vital for a 6+ hour event.
- Hydration: Practice drinking regularly—aim for a bottle every hour, more in hot conditions.
- Nutrition: Use a mix of energy bars, gels, bananas, and sandwiches to avoid "bonking" - the common cycling term for running out of energ . Start fueling early in your rides.
- Pre-Event Meal: The night before, eat a carb-rich meal. On event morning, opt for oatmeal, toast, or a bagel with nut butter.
Equipment & Clothing
- Bike: A road bike with reliable gears and brakes is essential. Get a professional tune-up two weeks before the ride.
- Clothing: Layering is key—early starts can be chilly, but it warms up. Invest in padded shorts, moisture-wicking jerseys, arm warmers, and rain gear.
- Accessories: Don’t forget sunglasses, gloves, a helmet, spare tubes, tire levers, and a mini pump.
