Vancouver, BC - April 7th, 2025 - The Butterfly building soars at 1019 Nelson Street in downtown Vancouver, transforming the city’s skyline with its striking design. Developed by Westbank and designed by Revery Architecture, this 57-story luxury residential tower integrates with the historic First Baptist Church, blending modern innovation with heritage preservation. Its location at the high point of the downtown peninsula marks it as a gateway to the vibrant West End neighborhood.

Why It Exists

Westbank envisioned a project that redefines high-rise living while honoring Vancouver’s past. The Butterfly fulfills this by pairing upscale condominiums with community benefits, including a $90 million package featuring social housing and church restoration. The First Baptist Church, built in 1911, gains seismic upgrades and expanded facilities, ensuring its legacy thrives alongside the tower’s bold presence.

What It Offers

This architectural gem houses 331 luxury homes, boasting amenities like a 50-meter glass-roofed swimming pool and sky gardens on every level. These open-air breezeways connect residents to nature, fostering community and sustainability with natural light and ventilation. A seven-story social housing building with 61 units complements the tower, enhancing the area’s inclusivity.

When It Took Flight

Construction kicked off in late 2018, with crews excavating the site to make way for this ambitious mixed-use development. The Butterfly nears completion in 2025, standing as one of Vancouver’s tallest structures at 556 feet, its height amplified by the site’s 120-foot elevation above sea level.

Why It Resembles Clouds

The tower’s façade mimics clouds through its sculptural, white precast concrete panels and curved glass, reflecting the sky’s ever-changing hues. Revery Architecture drew inspiration from the ephemeral nature of clouds, crafting a light, flowing form that softens the building’s mass. This cloud-like aesthetic, paired with its butterfly-shaped silhouette from above, pays tribute to transformation and elegance, making it a standout in Vancouver’s urban landscape.
