UBC is my Alma Mater as well as my husband's and our three adult children's. I've seen the growth and expansion of many faculty buildings as well as the vast construction of townhouses, apartments and services on campus. I live in Kitsilano and with UBC being within 10 minutes drive., I often bike around campus or go for long walks there and in Pacific Spirit Park.
History
The University of British Columbia (UBC) began its academic journey in 1908 with operations starting in 1915 at a temporary site in Fairview. Officially opening the doors of its Point Grey campus in 1925, UBC had 379 students enrolled and offered limited programs in Arts and Sciences.
Today the UBC campus encompasses approximately 993 acres (or 402 hectares) of land at Point Grey in Vancouver. It is situated on the University Endowment Lands (UEL) and is adjacent to Pacific Spirit Regional Park, providing a blend of academic, residential, and natural environments.
What began as a modest academic outpost has since evolved into one of the most prestigious research universities in the world.
Decades of Growth
UBC’s history is marked by steady expansion:
- 1930s: Student enrollment surpassed 1,000.
- 1950s: Post-war demand pushed the number of students to 5,000.

- 1980s: The university became home to over 30,000 students.
- Today: UBC serves more than 66,000 students across two main campuses in Vancouver and the Okanagan.
